Follow These Steps To Stay Healthy During The Holidays!

Turkey, ham, stuffing, mashed potatoes, pumpkin pie and cranberry sauce are dishes that we all love to eat during the holidays, but unfortunately, they also throw us off our healthy eating habits.  There’s a way to enjoy all of that yummy food but without overindulging (as much as you might want to), and staying on the healthy side.

 

OMG!  Your friends and family are having a huge buffet.  What can you do? Instead of diving in and putting everything you see on your plate, create a plan.  Your first plate of food should be restricted to vegetables and salad, and during your second trip, grab small portions of the other foods you want to eat.  This will allow you to taste everything and will also keep you from feeling deprived.

 

If your family and friends have open bars at their holiday parties, you may be tempted to overindulge on the booze.  However, instead of drinking the night away, have only one drink, nurse it for a while and don’t go back to the bar.  By only consuming one, you’ll lower how many calories you take in.  If you must have more than one, order a glass of white wine instead of a glass of red wine and add some ice cubes to it; it will make your drink last longer.  If you’re drinking a cocktail, stay away from soda or juice mixers.  And of course, please don’t drink and drive — the healthiest rule of all.

 

When the party is over, don’t take any leftovers home.  This will allow you to get back on track the next day.  If you are hosting the party, send your guests home with all of your leftovers — they will love it!  This way, you will not have any temptations in your refrigerator the next day.

 

It’s not difficult to keep your bad eating habits at bay during the holidays.  By following these simple steps, you can have control of what you eat by still being able to indulge in all the decadent foods that these holiday parties have to offer — without jeopardizing your waistline.

The phrase “you are what you eat” isn’t just a saying, it should actually be a lifestyle!  As we grow older, our bodies change enormously — but instead of just rolling with the punches, more research suggests that what we put in our bodies is linked to how long we live.

 

Eat omega-3s everyday

Eating omega-3s on a daily basis can help lower cholesterol, reduce inflammation, lower the risk of cancer, stroke and heart attack.

 

Omega-3s are found in seafood, ground flaxseed, soybean oil, walnuts and kale.

 

Eat antioxidants

Antioxidants are known to curb the aging process by protecting the free radicals that damage our DNA.   Antioxidants can help prevent cancer, Alzheimer’s, cataracts, protect your skin from sun damage and reduce the incidence of sunburn.

 

Antioxidants are found in carrots, kale, spinach, berries, grapes, cherries, green tea, apples and pears.

 

Get more Fiber in your system

Fiber not only protects against cancer, but according to the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, every additional 10 g of dietary fiber consumed daily reduces the risk of death from coronary heart disease by 17%.  An intake of  25 to 35 grams of fiber should be consumed on a daily basis, but unfortunately, most Americans only eat half.

 

Fiber is found in lentils, chickpeas, raspberries, apples, prunes, mangos, almonds, black beans and raw strawberries.

 

Eat more healthy fats

Eating more healthy fats not only aid in lowering your cholesterol and decreases your risk of heart disease, but they also contribute to a longer life expectancy.  On a daily basis, you should be consuming 25% of your daily calories from healthy fats

 

Healthy fats are found in avocados, eggs, olive oil, nuts, fatty fish, peanut butter and tofu.

 

Consume more protein

Incorporating protein into your daily diet is essential.  Your body needs protein to protect and maintain itself, so packing on the protein is definitely a good idea.  Eating 30% of your daily calories from lean protein will help your health and your overall vitality.

 

Protein is found in skinless white meat, turkey, egg whites and beans.

 

Aging is inevitable, but doing these simple things will help you age gracefully and keep you healthy!
